The dogs found the mud.
Raina and Will’s first date was mini golf and a walk on the beach, after their friend made a well-timed exit. Three and a half years later, their wedding morning had its own little adventures. The dogs were rolling in mud, and their friends were determined someone would notice the napkins they had stayed up ironing. Raina laughed that the mud and chaos were a pretty accurate picture of their life together. Through all of it, she and Will were looking forward to the same thing: finally seeing each other at the altar.

We were at the top of the mountain after sunset when we pulled out a little light and started making Star Wars pictures. I got to nerd out with Will, and everyone had an amazing time with it. We had already made the engagement photographs and film along the hike, so this was how the session finished. It is still one of my favorite memories of getting to know them before the wedding.

At rehearsal, we sat down with the people who knew Raina and Will to hear their stories. We did not have a boom-pole holder for the C-stand yet, so Matt held the pole by hand through the interviews. This was one of our early weddings doing both photo and video, and I remember that detail so clearly. We were figuring things out as we went, while making sure we came home with those conversations.

Showing up as friends.
By the wedding, we had already gone hiking, shared meals and spent time getting to know Raina and Will. Arriving felt like meeting friends, and we got to enjoy the reception with them, too. That experience helped us understand why we wanted to keep making engagement films. The time beforehand made everyone more comfortable when the wedding arrived, and these two were so sweet to us from the very beginning.
