The first date was Panera.
Julia Mae was riding home from the beach with friends when Luke messaged her on Instagram and asked her to Panera. They looked him up together and told her to go. At sixteen and seventeen, Julia and Luke were already imagining their wedding; years later, their letters still went back to that first date and those early plans. When Julia heard we were making wedding films, she changed her plans to book us. They became our first engagement-film couple, giving us the chance to try an idea that became a big part of how we get to know our couples.

Our first engagement film.
Julia and Luke were our first engagement-film couple, so we were figuring out what these films could be while we made theirs. Smith was hanging out of the back of a truck filming Julia driving, which gives you an idea of how much fun we were having. In the edit, I kept it almost entirely in black and white because I wanted that old noir-film feeling. It is still one of my favorites, and this session is where the idea for our engagement films really began.
