My first phone call with Brooklyn turned into a conversation about her engagement film before the contract was even signed. She and David gave us room to try things, and we spent the months before their wedding getting to know them with a camera in hand.

Brooklyn's Dress Shopping Film

The third dress was the one. Brooklyn went shopping in Birmingham with her mom and David’s mom. A piece added at the top made it feel like hers. This was only the second time Garrett and Smith had filmed a bride choosing her dress; by the wedding, they would watch David see it.

Chapter 01 · College

A homecoming introduction

Brooklyn was helping with the homecoming float at David’s fraternity when he walked in and saw her sitting on the pool table in an oversized Notorious B.I.G. shirt.

He thought she was out of his league and walked straight past her. A friend made the introduction, and another let him know she might actually be interested. David came back to help with the float the next day. Brooklyn says she was making it obvious; David admits he is not great at taking hints.

Chapter 02 · An early date

Six hours for The 1975

Brooklyn wanted to be close to the stage for The 1975, so general-admission tickets meant getting there early.

David waited outside with her for six hours in the freezing cold, even though he wasn’t into the band. She knew he was there because it mattered to her. When she tells the story now, that is the part she comes back to: if he could do that with her, she thought they could do life together.

Chapter 03 · Life together

Faith, friends, and each other

When Brooklyn talks about marrying David, she keeps coming back to getting to spend every day with her best friend.

She loves that he believes in her and encourages her in her faith. His friends describe the same person: passionate, dependable, and ready to stand up for the people he loves. Those are the things they wanted to carry into their life together.

This is still one of my favorite engagement films we’ve made. They gave us the freedom to try things, and finding the balance between their conversations and the music was what I loved about editing it. You get to hear who they are and then spend a little time just watching them together. Also, the Fleetwood Mac album from the film definitely ended up in my record collection.

We learned something filming Brooklyn and David: sometimes the best person to put behind the camera is the person they’re marrying. They were already comfortable with each other, so handing them the camera gave us reactions we couldn’t get by directing every little thing ourselves. Their conversation kept going, and they got to have fun with it. Garrett and I came away from that session with something we wanted to try again.

Editing this one was so much fun because we had more than a wedding day to work with. We’d been there for the engagement session and dress shopping, and by the reception we’d spent months getting to know Brooklyn and David. I think you can feel that in the films and photographs. Their Midsummer Cut also included a private time capsule, so they have those longer pieces of the day to keep for themselves.
