Abbi and Banks
Five months on the phone.
Abbi had told her friends she wasn’t doing long distance. Then Banks came along, and suddenly she was working out the time difference between Nashville and Germany. They spent five months talking before they met in person, getting well past the small talk along the way. By the wedding, her friends were laughing about the rule she’d been so sure of, and Banks was talking about how those calls had let him really get to know her.

The edit.
Abbi and Banks had a relaxed, intimate wedding, and I wanted the film to move at that pace. I deliberately took the edit slowly. Smith filmed more candid interviews, and we put microphones on more people so we could keep the conversations happening off to the side as well. Those unobtrusive moments helped the film feel like we were there with them.

The reception.
The reception is another section I would highlight from Abbi and Banks's wedding. Their friends talk about the long-distance part of their relationship while the film moves through the celebration. I liked keeping those voices in the sequence, because they help you learn about the couple while you watch the day unfold. That fits the simple, intimate feeling I wanted for this edit.
